AREA FIRE DEPARTMENTS REFINE WATER MOVEMENT SKILLS
On Monday, August 31, several area fire departments (50 personnel) got together and practiced their skills in moving/hauling/pumping large quantities of water – also known to some as a Water Shuttle Operation.
This operation
includes locating a water source (not always a typical fire hydrant),
pumping water from that source in to a tender (water hauler), hauling
that water to the fire or incident site, dumping the water in to a
portable tank, then pumping it from the tank to and thru the fire attack
lines. Needless to say, this is a well-orchestrated operation and can
produce at least 1,000 gallons of water per minute. This is not a new
concept overall as some departments have been doing it for almost 25
years. However, it is somewhat unique and new for the newer firefighters
of today. And, it never hurts for the seasoned firefighter to review the
operation.
This past spring the departments from Bath, Chippewa, Copley, Fairlawn, Granger, Norton, Richfield, Sharon and Valley completed 2 hours of Water Shuttle classroom training. Copley Fire Department volunteered to host the practical part of the training that was held on Serenity Lane in Copley Township.
