“A Victorian Christmas in Bath Township”
October 2, 2011 ~ February 29, 2012

Bath Township Historical Society/Museum have decked the hall of the Historic Bath Town Hall for Christmas. This exhibit includes seven trees decorated with Victorian (1850-1900) themes, authentic tree ornaments displayed in glass cases, and vintage costumes displayed on seventeen mannequins. Replica and handmade Victorian ornaments will be on sale during the exhibit.

Scenes within the hall include the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Englebeck, Bath Township residents at the turn of the twentieth century; caroling around the Eckart pump organ; reading of “T’was the Night Before Christmas” story; St. Nicholas with his sack of presents; and the return home in time for Christmas of Pvt. Wilber Alexander, 14th US Infantry, veteran of the Spanish American War.

The familiar horse-drawn Davis sleigh is on display inside the museum.

Season's Greetings!

Your local museum volunteers and friends have created a new exhibit at the Bath Township Museum which will open on Sunday, October 2, 1:00-4:00 pm.  Featured in this exhibit are 7 Christmas trees decorated with various Victorian themes.  Three display cases are filled with authentic Victorian tree ornaments. Two additional cases are filled with artifacts from "Christmas Wish Lists Past"...one filled with toys for good boys and girls; another with wished for items for house and home.  During the next five months, homemade and reproduction Victorian-style tree ornaments will be on sale for $2.00 each during regular museum hours. These ornaments are on the trees, ready to be selected for purchase and taken home.

As always, the museum mannequins are attired in era appropriate costumes.  One scene contains artifacts from the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Englebeck, another shows a mother reading to her children on Christmas Eve, also a family riding in the Davis Family horse drawn sleigh, and another with carolers ready to greet the season with song at the Eckart Family pump organ. Remembering our veterans, Pvt. Wilber K. Alexander returns from the Spanish American War in time for the holidays. Oh, and let's not forget St. Nicholas just waiting to deliver his sack of presents!

During the four Sundays of November, Make it, Take it workshops will be held for children and adults who would like to design and create their own Victorian style tree ornaments.  All of the materials used in these sessions have been donated, so there is no charge for the items.  Workshop times are 2:00-3:00 on November 6, 13, 20 and 27.

VOLUNTEERS are always welcome to join us in our many activities. There are tasks to be accomplished during our work sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00-11:30 am; Sundays from 1:00-4:00 pm. There are additional tasks which may be accomplished at home. To volunteer, please visit the museum, send email, or call me at 330.659.4211.

Finally, we continue to research the nearly 150 veterans of the Civil War who were connected to Bath Township. Having reached our goal, we have purchased 4 Union reenactor uniforms on eBay...two used and two new...which will become part of the April 2011 exhibit on "Bath Township's Role in the War of the Rebellion". We are looking for any Civil War era artifacts or replicas that may be placed on loan during this spring exhibit. This would include military and civilian items, documents, diaries, letters, and especially photographs. If you have a Civil War veteran in your genealogy, Confederate or Federal, and would like to include his story in our exhibit, please send email or call me.

Thank you for your continued support of the Bath Township Historical Society Museums!
